How much do you think your appearance affects your confidence in life?

Ipsos, one of the world's largest market research and opinion polling companies, recently published a report on "Global Insights on Plastic Surgery and Confident Living". The study explores the role of confidence in daily life and overall well-being, as well as the link between our inner self and our outer performance.

The survey polled 15,000 adults aged 21 to 75 (21 to 65 in Asia Pacific) from 15 countries, who had either undergone cosmetic treatments in the past or were interested in doing so in the near future. The regions and countries surveyed included:

Asia Pacific: China, South Korea, Thailand

EMEA: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, and UAE

Latin America: Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico

North America: United States, Canada

Ipsos said: "Our survey report confirms what society has long felt: it seems that beauty treatments are not just about improving appearance, but can also help people feel empowered and help them on their journey to self-confidence."

Personal attitudes and confidence 

69% of respondents agree with the statement "I feel confident in myself".

When looking in the mirror, 47% of respondents in Asia Pacific feel somewhat or very confident, including 64% in China, 50% in Thailand and 28% in South Korea.

Most people appreciate and take care of their bodies, despite their imperfections. For example, more than 90% of people pay attention to their body needs, more than 80% appreciate the uniqueness of their body and 54% are satisfied with their appearance, but some people are still critical of their appearance.


Beauty treatment related 

79% of people seek beauty treatments to show their inner feelings.

78% of respondents believe that beauty treatments affect how they see themselves.

After receiving beauty treatments, 85% of people feel they have taken good care of themselves and have performed effective self-care, 84% feel satisfied, 79% feel more energetic and empowered and 69% feel free to try new experiences.

Among the goals people hope to achieve through beauty treatments, 48% cite improving skin health, appearance and confidence, and 40% cite preventing signs of ageing.

62% of people consider beauty treatments for regular beauty maintenance, 42% for life changes and 37% for increased professional exposure.


External influences 

62% of respondents believe that beauty is subjective, 55% feel more focused on their appearance due to video calling and 36% feel pressured to conform to society's beauty standards.

The biggest influences on self-image are partners/spouses (57%), friends/family (56%) and healthcare professionals (56%).

62% learn about beauty treatments from social media and influencers and 40% from friends and family.

62% feel very or somewhat comfortable discussing beauty treatments, but 40% are still reluctant to discuss them for fear of being judged.
